A group of artists carefully selected by the founder – Taivo Niitvägi – who share a deep interest in various musical traditions: from folk music through Gregorian chant to sophisticated polyphonic liturgical music. Linnamuusikud guarantees an excellent artistic level and unique interpretive ideas. The encounter with the sacred in the mystical sounds of melody, modes, harmony, silence and texts, in an unusual, almost elusive sound texture, are the features upon which we have been identifying the achievements of the group for years. Their interpretations of early music are original and far from museology and stem from the reliance on the tradition preserved by the music of sources, through traditions ethnically associated with Estonian culture. The ensemble’s activities have created a space for a kind of musical laboratory for several generations of young musicians who are still developing their skills, while enriching the cultural landscape of Estonia.
